I’ll be making my Norway musical debut at Stratos Bar in Oslo, thanks to the wonderful DJ Purr Purple! Her night “Purple People” happens every Wednesday from 16:00-23:00 starting with me on 26th June, Nuteq (NO) 24 July, Portformat (DE) 7th August, KRTS (US) 14th August then Jay Scarlett (UK) 21st August.

This is my 4 track recorder - this is where songwriting got serious for me about 14 years ago and where I learnt the basics of the recording process. Many songs I’ve released over the years (In my first band Stylus77 or later as a solo artist) started out as demos on this. I busted this out tonight to have a listen to some of the tapes before I pass it on to the next generation… whether they’ll use it or not, who knows. All I know is that the lengthy process of doing things back then helped me learn the basics without the added distraction of plug-ins, effects and preset sounds found in today’s software - play it, record it, if it’s bad then do it all over again. I think you call that practice…

…anyway, technology is amazing these days but you’ll never be able to beat the charm of a good old, noisy, “hit the dolby button to get rid of the hiss”, one track doesn’t work properly, zero-stop button having, hard to lug around, 4 track!

May the sweet sound of tape hiss never be forgotten!

Flash Fullas (Pet Johnson and I) will be joined by the wonderful Lisa Tomlins, both spinning records and singing, as we take the Flash Fullas sound into the live music realm. Come and say farewell! Time Capsule - Beastie Boys “Grand Royal” Magazine.

I’m moving to Norway soon so have been going through all of my things trying to tell myself I’m a grown man now and I need to move on… but some things are forever! Unfortunately for the Beastie Boys, these mags of part of my collection that has to go, or rather, I think they’d be great to share with someone who has never seen them before. #knowledgeispowerbettershared

So, these classic magazines from the Beastie’s now defunct Grand Royal label are full of future classic material, interviews with their peers and cutting edge artists of the times, and reflect all things Beastie. At the time the band was inundated with fanmail that they didn’t get around to replying to. Other bands had successful delved into the world of Zines, so in true Beastie fashion they thought, “Let’s do a magazine”. The 7,500 copies of Issue #1 sold out immediately so they printed 50,000 of issue 2, but ended up with 10’s of thousands leftover. Grand Royal, the label, eventually went under and the magazine disappeared forever.

The highlight for me is in issue 4, with Ghostface talking about the newly launched Wu-Wear clothing label.
